I loved the reindeers and the sheep race I rameber star and silver they were the two girls and on the sheep race my sheep one first place. It was yucky when we saw the pigs poo they should clean it up.and if you really remember us lady then you should remember you gave us that vegtable.i didn’t feed the cow because it was slimy and his tong was so long . When we went on the tractor ride there was a lamb it was so close to get run over I think that is so so dangerouse.

Hi Jenny, I saw two lambs and a ewe in the main pen today with numbers on their sides so they might be from the last batch.
Maybe they are there for training purposes to new mums ; )

    Shelagh,
I was curious about the black sheep so I have Googled the breed you named and they do look like them. Can’t wait to see their black lambs. It’s nice to see something different, and I never realised I could become so interested in sheep.

Yes this batch have. We have another batch that start in ten days and then another that start nearer to the Easter holidays. You can still watch the lambs playing as they will stay in the marquee for a couple more weeks until the weather gets better and they can go outside. The marquee will then be used for the next batch of ewes and lambs.

Is the lamb lying next to the fence where the buckets are OK. It has been lying there for a while and I haven’t seen a ewe anywhere near it.

Do you expect the new ewes to give birth soon??

All fed and watered and settled down for the night
The sheep are all content and the lambs are asleep nicely snuggled down in the fresh straw to keep warm
Off to bed for a few hours now I hope the snow keeps away!!

Further to an earlier question the extra ewes that have been moved into the lambing shed are called Mules
These are crossbred sheep Their mothers are a hill breed called Swaledales and their fathers are a breed called Blue Faced Leicesters
I buy these sheep each year from Lancashire
Bitterly cold tonight I think we could get snow early next week again!!

Hi. I love your webcam angle – you get the best of both worlds, the expectant ewes and the mama ewes with their lambs.

Those little lambs are having a good time today all racing around together. They always make me smile. I just want to pick them up and cuddle them.

You do a good job, it looks like fun but a lot of hard work and long hours too at this time of year. Thanks for all the info you give us too.

Had a great time at the farm yesterday, with daughter and three grandchildren. Very cold day. But l loved it. l think all the people that are helping the lambs give birth are wonderful. This was my first time with my willows pass.

Farmer Andrew – could you please tell us the breed make up of the new group of ewes?

  36. February 20, 2013 at 11:37 pm

Just got back having finished the night feed of the lambs all quiet for now
In answer to an earlier question we put a rubber band on tyhe lambs tails so the end of the tail drops off
It takes a couple or weeks or so to drop off
We do this because when the lambs go outside and start eating grass if they had long tails they would get dirty bottoms and then the flies would lay their eggs in the dirty wool which if left would hatch into maggots,,, not nice

  37. February 20, 2013 at 11:14 pm

do lambs shed their longer tail? how long do they keep their long tail before loosing it?

  38. February 20, 2013 at 9:20 pm

The ewes are naturally mated with Beltex rams bur we time the mating to coincide with them lambing during Feb half term
The length of time they are in labour varies and of course we only notice them when they are in the later stages of labour
Once a ewe starts lying down and straining if hse has not produced a lamb within about an hour we would catch her and see if she needs help

Are the ewes inseminated at the same time and how long do they labour?
    I am loving watching this.

  41. February 20, 2013 at 7:49 pm

The ewes we are lambing at the moment are cross breds. These cross bred were bred from Mule ewes (grey faced) and Texel rams (white faced). The ram we used to mate these ewes were Beltex (white faced). This means that we won’t get any black lambs from these sheep, instead the lambs will mostly have white faces.

Katie- one of the shepherds at willows
  42. February 20, 2013 at 6:56 pm

We have not had any black lambs from these sheep as because of the breed of the ewes and the rams they will all be white lambs
We do however have some sheep in the next group to lamb that will have black lambs so watch out for them in a few weeks
All the sheep on view will have their lambs between now and Sunday but none showing signs just yet

I am pleased your boys enjoyed the experience it really is special to see one being born and something I am sure they will remember for some time to come
We have had well over a 100 lambs born in the last week and about 300 more due in the next month so I am afraid we do not name them all
We only give names to the pet bottle reared lambs

Another single born at 11.05am. She will be left to lick her lamb for a while before they are put into a smaller pen to allow them to bond. You can see the lamb is already trying to stand looking for it’s first milk called colostrum.
